The Sunset Hills Charity Mens and Womens Doubles was slated to begin tomorrow... but because a record 174 players signed up, the tournament committee had to play some match on Friday night (along with using a second venue on Saturday morning) 174 player is a 48 player increase over last year (which was also a record number of entrants). So for those of you that are keeping track.. between the Mixed Double Charity Tournament and this weekend's tournament that is a little over 290 players.
From someone that loves this game so much and from someone who loves living in West Georgia...... I am so excited about the direction that tennis is headed in West Georgia. I see it daily!
We went from a small little tennis community.... to a community whose USTA League Tennis has grown to be the 9th largest in the state, whose increase continue to grow season after season.... who has produced USTA Georgia State Champions and Finalist at the Adult, Combo and Mixed Levels. A community who can support multiple Junior and Adult tournaments throughout the year. A community whose Junior Team Tennis is about to explode in popularity. It is all very neat to see.... in fact, we are outgrowing our facilities. The courts are booked everywhere I go..... last night the High School Courts were packed.. tonight all the courts were booked at the College....... Lakeshore, well I am sure there are people standing in line to get on those courts as you read this.. it is just the way it is there.
Hopefully the rec. Departments will catch wind of this and start building us additional courts!
So now that I have said all that.. I just want to mention a little bit about the tournament this weekend. I am going to be blogging after each day of play. My camera broke.. so no pictures .....unless someone let's me borrow one :).
As you can imagine all the draws are loaded with talent.. levels are Mens and Womens 3.0-4.0 with Mens and Womens open divisions. The majority of players are from Carrollton and other towns in West Georgia, but there are players from LaGrange, and Newnan.. visiting and spending money in our town!
Here are the draws for each division:
Mens 3.0
Mens 3.5
Mens 4.0
Mens 4.5
Mens Open- White
Mens Open-Red
Womens 3.0
Womens 3.5
Womens 4.0
Womens Open
Until tomorrow, keep your eye on the ball and split step!

Day 1 State Mixed Championships
Great day of tennis in Augusta at the USTA Georgia State Mixed League Championships!
Our first match was yesterday at 8:00 against the Savannah B team. Savannah always brings good mixed teams to this tournament and as the scheduled worked out we played both Savannah teams on Friday. The second Savannah team we played won it last year, so we knew going in today that we needed to be at our best!
The first match at 8:00 was at a small Racquet Club here in August called "The Club at Raes Creek". The have 2 red clay courts, 2 Rubico Courts and 6 Hard Courts. Our match of course was on Hard Courts. The team pulled it 2-1 to get the team point. I played with Jeannette Ranero and we lost a heart breaker, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) for the record we were up 9-6 in the tiebreaker... OUCH! I was very happy with my play.. could have gone either way. Erica and Brent won easily at 2 to clinch it.
Not being scheduled to play again until 5:00, we headed to Sports Authority to get some socks and wrist bands and Target to get water and then back to the hotel where we hung out watching what else, but tennis on the Tube.
A little Drama before our 5:00 match at Newman Tennis Center, my partner Stacey Boulware got in to town mid afternoon for the 5:00 match, we carpooled to the match. When we got there (30 mins early) Stacey realized her shoes were in her car..... so we had a problem. I can't thank Ann Newman enough for letting Stacey borrow an extra pair of shoes! Saved the day!
There were about 4 WGTA teams at Newman for the 5:00 matches.... Emily Roberts 8.0 team beat Atlanta 2-1.... then my 9.0 team and Edward Howard's WGTA 9.0 team both went on at 5:00.... Ruth Milian's Sr 6.0, Di Martin's Sr 7.0 team and Sean Osowskis 5.0 team all stopped by to watch the matches... it was really neat to see all the West Georgia players there!
The team went on the beat Savannah A 2-1! So we are in First Place! Stacey and I played a woman, Julie Childs from Hilton Head (My home town)... we won 6-4, 6-4. Unlike this morning's match, the pace was a lot slower than the first match and and that took me a while to adjust... Stacey played flawless tennis and really carried us in this match. Brent Barfield and Erica Echko won 6-3, 6-3 at 2 and Josh Brisbane and Denise Newton lost at 1, 6-1, 7-5
The win kept us in 1st place.... just behind undefeated Augusta who we play on Sunday at 12:30. It is going to be a tough tough match and one that probably determines who wins.... so be thinking of us at 12:30.
Seems WGTA had a pretty good day!
6.0 Tim Dillard team split their 2 matches on Friday... beating Columbus 2-1 and then losing to Rome 2-1
6.0 Jenny Ingram team lost both of their matches Friday... losing 3-0 to Columbus and 3-0 to Atlanta
7.0 Teri Arias team lost their 1 matches Friday 2-1 to Columbus
8.0 Emily Roberts team split their 2 matches Friday..... losing to Conyers 3-1 and beating Cherokee County 2-1
9.0 John Crenshaw team won both matches Friday... beating Savannah B 2-1 and Savannah A 2-1
Sr 7.0 Di Martin team lost there 1 match on Friday 2-1 to Augusta
More to report later.....

ROAD TRIP... STATE BOUND!
TENNIS ROAD TRIP

We are here and ready to get the tournament started!
After taking a half day at work, I picked up team mate Josh Brisbane at his downtown Atlanta office and headed to Augusta. The trip gave us a couple of hours to talk lineup and strategies.... we are in it to win it! Josh is going to be the lineup captain this weekend..... our teams combined to create this team and he knows all the players better than me.. in fact, I pretty much am not a good lineup maker.

We arrived in Augusta in time for a hit at the Newman Tennis Center, the main site of the tournament. The center is a 18 court facility that reminds me a little bit of Dekalb Tennis Center with it's pyramid shape. I so wish Carrollton had something like it....We had planned to hit just for a half hour but hit for about an hour. We got to play on the Center Court which was neat but it is in a pit and it felt very hot..... might need to drink a little extra water to rehydrate tonight.

After tennis, we went to the captain's meeting. Jenny Ingram, Teri Arias and Emily Roberts asked me to get their packets so I had my hands full. The captains meeting covered everything that we need to know for the tournament. I also won a drawing. That makes about the 5th captains meeting where I have won something!
We also found out that one of the Savannah teams is forfieting line 3 in all if its matches.. we play the team first, so we had to rethink our lineups for tomorrow. I think it will work out just fine!
After Dinner, we went to a Cuban inspired restaurant called Blue Sky Cafe downtown Augusta....very good!
We play tomorrow at 8:00.... I will update everyone how it went and what is going on with the other West Georgia Teams.

Sunset Hills Mixed Doubles Charity Tournament Final Day

I wanted to start of the final blog of the Sunset Hills Mixed Doubles Charity tournament by thanking Michael and Nicolle Coleman, the tournament Committee and the staff at Sunset Hills for putting on a flawless tournament year after year. This is really is an event the tennis community looks forward to each year.... WELL DONE!
I am on the Adult Competition Committee for USTA Georgia and I tell the other committee members that if every tournament in this state was run even HALF as good as this tournament then there would be a lot more players playing tournament tennis in Georgia! Clearly when a tournament has 80 players 1 year and then 120 players the next year that is proof that they are doing everything right!
As I was driving home tonight I was thinking that this tournament is a bit like Christmas.. you look forward to it every year, it takes a long time to get here and then it flies by.... the good thing is that in 2 weeks we all reconvene for the mens and womens Sunset Hills Charity Tournament to be played in 2 weekends.
One last thing, if you participated in this tournament this year please take 2 seconds to fill out a Survey about the tournament.. these are looked at by the competition committee...

Before I recap the divisions, I want to congratulate Claire Mowling and Eli Rowell on beating me an Carrie in the finals of the 9.0. They played great! I thought Carrie and I played very well. They beat us 7-5, 7-6. Could have gone either way! I am hoping that Carrie will play with me again in the future.. she is SO easy to play with!
6.0 The Battle of Greenway- Both TJ and Matt are co-workers of mine at Greenway.

Sunset Hills Mixed Charity Tournament Day 1
Today was a GREAT days of tennis at the Sunset Hills Charity Mixed Doubles Tournament. 120 players competed in 5 Divisions. As I suspected there were some fantastic matches played in very hot conditions.
All divisions are through to the Semi-Finals in the main draw and most of the consolation rounds. All players were assured of playing 2 matches. Some played as many as 3 matches today.
I got to the courts today a little after 9:00 AM. It was neat to see so many West Georgia USTA League players dominating their divisions.. this tournament really is so good for the tennis community in West Georgia... it is a weekend that we all meet up and have good time!
As a charitable donation, players are given the opportunity to buy Beer and Champagne Tables. Along with Beer and Bubbly.... a fantastic lunch was served by Sunset Hills CC. There was keg beer for all players.
I will start with me.... I am playing 9.0 with Carrie Penley. Carrie is super easy to play with..... we won our first round over Edward Howard and Yolanda King.... they are 2 of my favorite people so it was a lot of fun. Then in the second match we beat Ann Newman and Keith Crawford. I don't think I have ever seen Ann play so well.. she literally took over the match at one point. I new from the second I saw the teams signed up in 9.0 that it was going to be a lot of FUN and it was after day 1. We play Claire Mowling and Eli Rowell tomorrow in the Finals. It is going to be a tough tough match.. I play mixed regularly and practice with Claire and she is very very good tennis player... she and Eli compliment each other very well. Carrie and I are going to have to be at out very best to beat them. I am wondering why I help connect these 2 up as a team????
Here are the Semi Final/Final match ups in all the divisions... to be played Sunday.
TJ Freeman/Jessica Kelley Vs Ann Beck/Todd Middlebrook
Matt and Heather Clark Vs Cindy Osowski/Terry Sauls
Cory and Amy Rush Vs Brian Carter and Kelley Feddersen
Jon Richards/Jamie Chastain Vs Marc Morin/Wendy Cullison
Derek Bradley/Yvette Dolby VS Casey Pollard/Hannah Townsend
Mubashir Anwar/Lesley Lloyd Vs Dave and Alixanna Burg
John Crenshaw/Carrie Penley Vs Eli Rowell/Claire Mowling
Mark Swindle/Rebecca Buchanan Vs Josh Jones /Christina Schoerner
Joseph Anderson/Katherine Burger Vs Brian Anderson/Emma Grillo
See you all at Sunset Hills tomorrow!!!
Preview: Day 1 Sunset Hills Mixed Doubles Charity Tournament
Day 1 of the Sunset Hills CC Mixed Doubles Charity Tournament is upon us. I am sitting here looking at the draws deciding which matches that I want to see.
I thought I would go through the draw for each division and talk about some of the good first day match ups.
Mixed 6.0 Draw
This should be one of the most closely contested divisions in the tournament. I am looking forward to watching 2 of my Greenway co-workers: TJ Freeman, who is playing with Jessica Kelley.... (some of you may know Jessica, she works in the Sunset Hills CC tennis shop) and Matt Clark and his wife Heather. These 2 teams are on opposite halves of the draw. I think it would be great to see an all-Greenway final in this division!
I am also interested in seeing the Osowski/Davison Vs Huckeba/Ingram match.....Huckeba and Ingram are co-workers at Carrollton Realty and Insurance and Osowski/Davison are members of the 2008 USTA Georgia Mixed League 5.0 Champion team that played out of Fairfield Plantation.
Mixed 7.0
Anyones tournament to win in this one. First round battle of the brothers should be interesting. Marc Morin and Charles Morin are pitted against each other. Marc is playing with Wendy Cullison and Charles with Faith Pullen.
I also am interested to see the match between Bekki Smith and Wallace Smith (no relation) Vs Alan Anderson and Terri Musselwhite... this match is first up at 9:00 this AM. Wallace is so quiet and reserved and Bekki is not quiet and reserved
Mixed 8.0
There are 2 matches in this draw that I am looking forward to seeing. Sherrod/Williamson Vs Colpini/Hart and the other match is Gogart/Golgart Vs Hunt/Martin. Looking at the draw.. I have no idea who is the favorite to win it.... will be interesting to see who is holding the trophies on Sunday!
Mixed 9.0
This is my division and this level has, in my opinion, the #1 best match up of the first round of the whole tournament: Claire Mowling and Eli Rowell Vs Emily Roberts and David Kaplan. Literally, either one of these teams could win this division and they have to play each other first round. Anyone around should stop by at 12:00 and catch this one!
Open
This division is Open to players of any level or age. So, most of the players in this division are under 18. This is also the LOVE division. Mindy and David are playing together and Cope and Jordan are playing together.. we will see how they get along on the court :)
I am most excited about the match up between William Brown/Caroline Colpini Vs David Anderson/Emily Day.. although I don't know Emily I hit with the other 3 from time to time and they are all such good kids.
Well this sums up the first day... weather is going to be nice and hot. Put on that sunscreen and head on out for a GREAT day of tennis at Sunset Hills!
See you at the matches!

Eve of the Sunset Hills Charity Tournament
Tomorrow begins 3 of my favorite weekends of the year.. Sunset Hills Charity Mixed Tournament, USTA Georgia Mixed League Championships in Augusta and then the Men's and Women's Doubles Sunset Hills Charity Tournament.
Tomorrow is the first day of the Sunset Hills Charity Mixed Doubles tournament at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton, Ga. There are 120 players entered. It is the largest tournament in West Georgia and my guess is it will be the largest Mixed ONLY tournament in the state this year.
All players entered will gain points towards a USTA Georgia Mixed Doubles State Ranking in Mixed Combo levels 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 and Open. Most importantly, it gets most of the tennis players together for one heck of a fun weekend. The event is extremely well organized.. first class tournament. I play a lot of tournaments in this state and this one is incredible. One unique aspect is that the committee sells Champagne and Beer tables to folks who sit at them all day an watch tennis... so there are spectators watching all day long!
All proceeds from this tournament goes to local Charities in Carrollton.... it has been going on for many years and is greatly anticipated by all tennis players in West Georgia.
I am playing 9.0 with Carrie Penley.. My rating is 5.0 and Carrie is a 4.0 so our combined rating is 9.0. Carrie is a great player and a super person.. I am looking forward to playing with her.
I am going to blog over the next three weeks these three events. I look forward to talking tennis .. as always! I am taking my camera, so look for some pictures!

Less than 2 Weeks until the USTA Georgia Mixed Doubles League Championships!

Today, I got a crazy idea that I wanted to Blog from the USTA Georgia Mixed Doubles States tournament in Augusta that is being held August 14-17.
I am the Local League coordinator for USTA League tennis in West Georgia. A lot of our players strive to make it to the state tournament..... they, like I, love every second of the competition and camaraderie. Others have never been and some have even been on teams that have declined their invitation.
I hope that this Blog lets everyone in West Georgia see what goes on at a State Tournament.. on and off the courts, the wins, the losses, the dinners, the hanging out at the pool, etc.
I also am going to try to keep everyone up today with all the teams that will be representing West Georgia:
5.0- Fairfield- Sean Osowski
6.0- Fairfield- Jenny Ingram
6.0- Lakeshore Park- Tim Dillard
7.0- Temple Parks and Rec- Teri Arias
8.0- Golds Gym- Emily Roberts
9.0- Lakeshore Park- John Crenshaw
9.0- Anneewakee Trails- Edward Howard
Senior 6.0- Brookmont- Ruth Milian
Senior 7.0- Lakeshore Park- Diane Martin
I can't wait.. from now until then, I need to figure out how this blogging thing works!
